Stampede kills 10 in Bangladesh

At least 10 people were killed and 50 others injured on Monday evening during a stampede at a community center in southeastern Chittagong city, police said.

Iqbal Bahar, the city's police commissioner, told reporters that the stampede occurred when food was being distributed at a funeral rite of former Chittagong mayor Mohiuddin Chowdhury.

Mohammad Osman Ghani, a close aide of Chowdhury, said the family had arranged food for 80,000 people at 12 places in the city.

Chowdhury, 73, of the ruling Awami League Party, passed away last Friday.
