Turkiye's 1st climate council kicks off

Turkiye's first climate council kicked off on Monday with the aim to form a roadmap in line with the Paris Agreement to reach the 2053 net zero emissions target.

Over 1,000 representatives of public institutions and universities, scientists, businesspeople, farmers and activists will gather in the central province of Konya for the event.

"This council will be the most important step toward the green revolution," Murat Kurum, Turkiye's environment, urbanization and climate change minister, said in a tweet.

“We will determine Turkiye's new roadmap in seven different areas, from greenhouse gas reduction to green finance and carbon pricing, from climate change adaptation to local governments, from migration, just transition and social policies to science and technology,” he said.

“We will work together for our common home, our world and our paradise, the future of our nation, and the future of our children," he added.

Over the course of five days, youth meetings, talks, exhibitions and a 3D climate tunnel will be organized.

Turkiye is expected to submit its updated nationally determined contributions at the 27th Conference of Parties (COP27) that will take place in Egypt this year where green financing will be among the main agenda topics.

A Climate Law, set for completion this year, is regarded as another milestone for the fight against climate change.
