In 1967, the Apollo 1 spacecraft under the US Moon program burned down during the trial phase, and astronauts Grissom, White and Chaffee died. Apollo 1 is the first leg of the program that the USA started after the Gemini Project to land and study the Moon. On January 27, 1967, while the Apollo 1 was in the test phase before the launch, a fire broke out in the capsule, and astronauts Gus Grissom, Ed White and Roger Bruce Chaffee died as a result of the incident. After this incident, the United States suspended the Apollo program and started efforts to make the capsule safer.
