In order to make the beggars in Istanbul, orphans wandering on the streets, and the orphans lying in the mosque courtyard together and rehabilitate them, to make them artistic, and to ensure that the orphans live their last life in peace, the Sultan of the time II. Abdulhamid Han ordered the establishment of a Darülaceze with a decree. An administration building, eight jobseekers' offices, kindergarten, infirmary and hospital, mosque, church, synagogue, workplaces, soup kitchen, bakery, bathhouse, laundry room, barber shop, staff housing for nurses and caregivers, rehabilitation center, animal slaughterhouse, It consists of 20 buildings that include units such as an inventory warehouse, dry food warehouse, fresh vegetable and fruit storage warehouse, and an ice house. For centuries, homeless, elderly and disabled people in need of care and children between the ages of 0-6 who were abandoned on the streets, regardless of religion, sect, language, race, class and gender, have been accommodated for free, meeting all their needs.

DARÜLACEZE HISTORY

The foundation process of Darülaceze goes back to the 1877 Ottoman-Russian War. After this war, migrations started and nearly four hundred thousand immigrants came to Istanbul between 1877-79. Homeless, sick, orphans and beggars have increased on the streets. In order to make the beggars in Istanbul, orphans wandering on the streets, and the orphans lying in the mosque courtyard together and rehabilitate them, to make them artistic, and to ensure that the orphans live their last life in peace, Sultan of the time II. Abdulhamid Han ordered the establishment of a Darülaceze with a decree. As a result of the inspections of the commission formed after this edict, they presented to the sultan that the establishment of Darülaceze in Okmeydanı would be approved and its construction could increase to 72,000 gold liras. Upon this, the construction of Darülaceze in Okmeydanı was ordered by the Sultan's decree dated 25 March 1306 (6 April 1890) and this edict was published with the Official Notice dated 30 March 1306 (11 April 1890) and entered into force. Sultan Abdulhamid Han donated 7,000 gold lira worth of belongings to cover the foundation costs of Darülaceze and donated 10,000 gold lira in cash. In addition, an aid campaign was organized, a large participation was achieved and 50,000 gold liras were collected with the donations collected. The foundation of Darülaceze was laid by cutting 21 sheep on October 6, 1892 with the construction money obtained in this way, and the construction of the buildings was completed on 19 August 1895, which was the year-i patrol of Sultan Abdülhamid Han, and the keys were handed over to Sultan Abdülhamid Han with two albums of photographs. . The official opening of Darülaceze was made on January 31, 1896.

DARÜLACEZE'S ACTIVITY AREAS

Established by Abdulhamid Han, Darülaceze has been a compassion home for 72,000 people, 29,000 of which are children, since its establishment; It provides services to the elderly, disabled people and orphans abandoned on the streets, regardless of religion, language, race, class and gender. All clothing, accommodation, food, health and care needs of the residents living in Darülaceze, which currently serves under the Ministry of Family, Labor and Social Services, are met by the institution, and the service continues 24 hours a day. With the examination and treatment services of the residents, preventive health services, emergency or chronic diseases are tried to be treated, and all kinds of medical treatments are provided by contacting the hospitals in cases requiring further examination and treatment. With the rehabilitation center, our residents who conduct workshops with psychologists and volunteers are adapted to social life and motivated.

TODAY IS CONNECTED TO THE MINISTRY OF FAMILY AND SOCIAL POLICIES

Today, the institution under the Ministry of Family and Social Policies is managed with an annexed budget. The revenues of Darülaceze consist of 10 percent of the charity donations, zakat, votive donation, sacrifice donations, real estate grants and the rents received from them, and 10 percent of the entertainment painting collected by the municipality.
