Turkish Red Crescent General Counselor Professor, who works to instill earthquake awareness in society, especially children, and also known as "Earthquake Grandfather" in the public. Dr. Ahmet Mete Işıkara passed away in 2013 in the hospital where he was treated in Istanbul. Işıkara was born in 1941 in Mersin. He graduated from Mersin High School in 1959 and from the Geophysics Department of Istanbul University Faculty of Science in 1965. In the same year, he became an assistant to the department he graduated from. Later, after serving in many groups and committees, he started to work at Boğaziçi University in 1985 and became the vice director; He became director in 1991. After the 1999 Gölcük earthquake, he worked on raising awareness in the society and was known as Earthquake Dede. He died of multiple organ failure in the hospital where he was treated in Istanbul on January 21, 2013.
