Paul Julius Freiherr von Reuter (Baron von Reuter; born Israel Beer Josaphat, July 21, 1816 - February 25, 1899) was a German-British entrepreneur and mediator of Jewish origin, who was the pioneer of the telegraph news reporting business and the founder of Reuters. Reuter was born in 1816 in Kassel, Germany as Israel Bira Yosaphat, in a Jewish family. His father, Samuel Levi Josaphat, was a rabbi, and his mother Betty Sanders was a housewife. Reuter met Carl Friedrich Gauss while conducting a test in the city of Göttingen when electrical signals reached the desired point with cables at one time. He moved to London on 29 October 1845 and introduced himself as Julius Yosaphat. On November 16, 1845, he changed from Orthodox Judaism to Christianity (Protestantism) with a small ceremony held at the St.George German Lutheran Chapel in London and changed its name to Paul Julius Reuter. A week later, in the same chapel, she married Ida Maria Elizabeth Clementine Magnus from Berlin, the daughter of a German banker. Reuter passed away at the age of 83.
